The Villa: Casa degli Artisti
Our Story
My wife Deborah Masters and I purchased Casa degli Artisti as a 600 year old ruin, and re-created it as a classic Italian villa. The house is perched on a hilltop a few kilometers from the medieval town of Todi in Umbria, Italy.
We began by clearing the land, demolishing the interior walls, replacing the roof, and reinforcing the floors. The next year we replaced the windows and doors, and planted roses and olives. We then enlisted an architect and hired various local tradesmen to put in lights and indoor plumbing, finish the floors and walls on the first floor and mezzanine, and create a kitchen and bath. Next, we finished the downstairs, added a pool, and continued to develop the landscape.
The olives and roses grew so well that we added more. Olive trees flourish on these hills and benefit from the abundant nutrients in this ancient land. Time and the land produce many magical things, among them black truffles, unique varietals, and our olive oil, naturally fertilized by local sheep and pressed in the traditional way (now available at the Kinderhook Farm Store).
Every season is special in Italy. During certain times of the year, a fog will descend in the valley, creating a sea of clouds that extends from the base of the villa to the bottom of the fortified walls of Todi. When this occurs you are transported to a place of wonder. The Umbrian hills make a magnificent backdrop no matter what time of year you visit, but if you want to enjoy the pool you will need to book your stay for late Spring, Summer, or early Fall.
